Glendale, AZ, located less than 10 miles to the northwest of Phoenix along State Route 60 or Grand Avenue, claims the title of Antique Capital of Arizona. The number of antique and collectible shops in the retro-chic Historic Downtown area of Glendale backup that claim.
The area combines two architecturally diverse neighborhoods. One neighborhood, the Old Town District, features typical, two-story, main-street-style redbrick buildings. The other neighborhood, the Caitlin Court Historic District, was created as Glendale's first organized building expansion and residential development program. It also was the first of Glendale's neighborhoods to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 9, 1992. In this part of the Historic Downtown, you'll find single-story, bungalow homes that have been converted into some of the 90 restaurants and specialty shops that comprise the downtown.
Glendale owes its existence to the building of the Arizona Canal in 1885, the link between Phoenix and Glendale created by the Santa Fe railroad in 1895, and the construction of a major ice plant for cooling produce for shipping. The canal provided water for irrigating farmland which attracted homesteaders like William H. Bartlett. Bartlett's homestead, the Sahuaro Ranch, a 640-acre fruit farm established in 1886, features 13 buildings, including the main house, the Adobe House. The Manistee Ranch, one of the last working cattle ranches in the Salt River Valley, began as a commercial orchard of citrus trees and date palms. Founded in 1897 by Herbert W. Hamilton, the ranch features a Queen Anne Victorian style house.
