Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you'll find answers to all of our most frequently asked questions.

Color

What type of paint is used on these doors?

We use multiple coats of automotive-grade paint on these galvanized steel doors. After their welds have been galvanized, they are primed and baked. Once they’ve gone through this process, they are clear-coated and ready to ship.

What colors do you offer?

Our exterior colors include Black, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Sunset Pink, Montecito Mint, Palm Desert Sand, Angeles Green, Brushed Silver and Pewter.

Our interior colors include all of the above, plus white.

Can I order a white exterior door or window?

No. White paint is very sensitive to oxidization and discoloration and will show wear within a matter of weeks when installed outdoors.

Are these doors powder coated?

No, these doors are not powder coated. Instead, we use automotive-grade paint.

Can I get a custom color?

Yes, you are able to get a custom color through our custom department. There will be an additional cost for custom colors. Fill in your information HERE in order to speak with someone from our team to start the process of designing your custom door.

Size

Can I get a size that is not listed?

Yes! We’re happy to make a fully custom door for you in the exact size you’re looking for. Visit our custom order page HERE and a specialist will reach out to you shortly.

Is the listed size for the door or the frame?

We measure the frame only because all of our doors come with the hand-made frame that they were made to be hung on.

**In the case of barn doors the measurement you see is the size of the door itself.

How big is the actual door if this is the measurement of the frame?

Our standard steel doors are 1 inch smaller on the height and 1 inch smaller on each side of the frame.

How tall is the split on Dutch doors?

The split of each dutch door is dependent on its overall height. On Air 4s, Air 5s, and Air Lites, the upper and lower door will be equal heights wight a middle split. For Air Getty Dutch doors, the lower door is kept smaller than the upper door. The lower door may range from 37”-44” depending on the overall size of the door.

Can I get dutch doors made with 2 bore holes?

Yes, the AIR Getty Dutch has 2 bore holes. The Air 4, 5, and Lite dutch doors have one bore hole, but can be special ordered with 2 bore holes so long as the height of the door is over 84”

Glass

Does your glass come protected or with a film on it?

Yes, our glass will arrive to you with a protective film that should be left on until the door is completely installed, and then removed.

Is this glass tempered?

Yes, with the exception of very small panes only available on custom orders, all of our glass is tempered.

What are the benefits of tempered glass?

The most important benefit of tempered glass is safety. Tempered glass reduces the risk of injury due to its tendency to break into small, circular pieces instead of sharp, jagged shards.

Tempered glass is also strong. Because the process of heating and applying chemicals strengthens the glass, tempered glass is an excellent choice for doors and any other projects where maximum durability is desirable.

How thick is the glass?

On exterior doors and doors with frost glass, each pane of our double-paned glass is 5mm thick with space between for insulation.

On interior doors, each pane of our single pane glass is 10mm thick.

Do you offer energy efficient / NFRC / energy star rated glass?

We offer multiple levels of energy efficient glass and doors. NFRC glass can be added to any door and many of our doors have been efficiency tested in many different configurations. We have NRFC glass, NFRC doors, and energy star rated doors and glass, with U factors as low as .21.

What is Low-e Glass?

The “E” in Low-e stands for emissivity - the ability to emit radiant energy. Low emissivity or Low-E Glass has a coating of microscopically-thin metal layers fixed to the surface to keep the heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated.

What are the benefits of Low-e Glass?

Improved Energy Efficiency: In addition to reducing heat loss during winter months, Low-E Glass also reduces heat gain during the air-conditioning season.

Reduced Condensation: Condensation on door glass can be a problem during the heating season, as warm air comes into contact with cold door glass and gives up its moisture, forming water droplets on the glass surface. Low-E Glass will minimize or eliminate this unwanted condensation.

What is dual pane glass?

Double-paned doors have two sheets of glass in the door frame instead of just one. Between the glass panes is a narrow gap filled with insulating gas to further improve insulation.

Do you offer privacy or decorative glass?

Yes. We offer a selection of privacy and decorative glass types that offer a range of levels of privacy.

Our doors and windows come standard with Low-e glass on exterior products and Clear glass on interiors products. Customers can also choose Frost, Ribbed, Rain, Flemish, Aquatex, Ford Blue, Wood, and Diamond glass.

Can I have dutch doors made with operable glass?

It is possible to order the Air Getty Dutch with operable glass, but no other Dutch door is able to have operable glass. For custom orders, contact us here

Do you offer door screens?

Yes. Doors with removable screens are available as Standard Sizes and Custom products only.

How far can a double door swing?

Swing Capacity: 180 Degrees

This measurement shows in degrees how far the hinges allow for the door to open. Please note, every project site is different, and this depends upon nothing on-site blocking the opening and the method your installer chooses to install the product. Please advise your installer before installation if you need the door to open to its full capacity.

Can the upper part of a dutch door swing both in and out?

No, the top door is bound to the same swing type as the rest of the door. The top can only close as much as the bottom is closed. The top can always be open to the same degree or more than the bottom door.

Jamb

What is a jamb?

A door jamb refers to the thickness of your door frame. This is not the frame itself, but is solely the measurement of how thick the door frame is; this should correlate with how thick the wall you’re mounting the door to is.

How do I measure my jamb?

The goal is to get the measurement from the outermost finishing of your exterior (stucco, brick, concrete, wood, etc.) to the drywall inside.

Is the jamb the same thing as the frame?

No - the “jamb” is solely the measurement of the thickness of your frame in regards to the inner wall of the uprights on your frame.

Is the jamb included with the door?

Yes, the threshold is an important component of the frame, which comes welded together.

Is the jamb/frame galvanized?

Yes, we use a galvanizing spray before doors go into the painting process.

What material is the frame made of?

We’ve gone above the industry standard and use cold-rolled galvanized mixed steel for our frames.

How is the jamb insulated?

We use a polyurethane foam filling to fully insulate our entire frames, including top and side windows.

How thick are exterior doors’ jambs?

Their jambs are 6”.

How thick are interior doors’ jambs?

Their jambs are 2”.

How thick are pantry doors’ jambs?

Their jambs are 1.57”.

What type of hinges do you use?

Steel weld-on bullet hinges with grease fittings come welded on jamb and door. We use welded steel bullet hinges with copper crush washers instead of a ball bearing hinge because ball bearings are made out of stainless steel (hard material) and the hinges/doors are made out of steel (softer material) which over time causes the hinge to wear. With copper crush washers, the washer is the soft point and they are easily replaceable over time if needed.

Locks and Handles

Do you offer locks & are they included with a door purchase?

Yes, we do offer a wide variety of locks. Locks are sold separately.

What are your bole hole lock specs?

Bore hole specs vary from door to door.

In order to ensure you purchase a lockset compatible with your door, please refer to the Information Center popup on product page for the door you intend to purchase entitled “Help Me Understand Size," and go to the Specs tab.

What is a bore hole?

A bore hole is the doorknob hole that is drilled on the face of the door with a hole saw. The hole is drilled halfway through from each side. The hole saw is also used to drill the cross bore, otherwise known as the latch hole. Both doorknob hole and latch holes come completed and drilled with every in-stock order to help your installer attach the lock with ease.

What is the center to center?

The vertical distance measured between the center-points of the two bore holes. In other words, it is the measurement from the middle of the top bore hole to the middle of the bottom bore hole.

This measurement is used to determine where a bore for the deadbolt is located above the bore for the latch. This information is important to help our customers purchase the correct compatible lock if you choose to purchase them from an outside hardware store.

In order to ensure you purchase a lockset compatible with your door, please refer to the Information Center popup on product page for the door you intend to purchase entitled “Help Me Understand Size,” and visit the Specs tab.

What is the back set?

The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole. The back set measurement is important to help our customers purchase the correct compatible lock with the correct latch size.

In order to ensure you purchase a lockset compatible with your door, please refer to the Information Center popup on product page for the door you intend to purchase entitled “Help Me Understand Size,” and visit the Specs tab.

What is the door thickness?

The doors are 2" inches thick, and include a steel threshold, and bullet hinges with grease fittings welded onto the frame.

Measuring

Will PINKYS come and measure my doorway or window?

Unfortunately we do not do home visits, however we do have the information needed for you or a contractor to make the correct measurements needed.

Do I need a contractor to measure for me?

No, you do not, however some people are more comfortable having their contractor make the measurement

How do I measure for my door?

If you have a rough opening (no door or door frame installed), use a measuring tape to get the measurements of the height and the width.

Your rough opening should be 2 inches wider and 1 inch taller than the door’s measurements in order to account for leveling of the door and the frame. It is very important that 1 inch is left on the top and each side. Once you get your rough opening size, subtract 1 inch from the height and 2 inches from the width, and that will be your door size. If you are measuring a door that already has another door frame in it’s place, follow the instructions at the beginning of the video here.

If you are measuring a door that already has another door frame in its place, you can either take off the upper door trim and measure from the edge of each stud, which will get you your rough opening size as outlined above, or you can measure from the inside of your door jamb to the other side and one from the floor to the top of the inside of your door jamb. Once you get those measurements, add an inch and ½ on each side and you’ll have your rough opening size. Subtract 1 inch from the height and 2 inches from the width, and you’ll have your door size from us.

With these measurements, go to our sizes and round to the nearest one. If the closest measurement we offer requires you to round down to our size, you should be able to move forward. If you must round up to our size, consult a contractor about the sizing, watch video.

**Barn doors should be 2 inches wider and 1 inch taller than your finished opening.

Can I measure for a new door if I currently have one in place?

How do I measure for my window?

If you have a rough opening (no window or window frame installed), use a measuring tape to get the measurements of the height and the width.

Your rough opening should be 2 inches wider and 1 inch taller than the window you're ordering in order to account for leveling of the door and the frame.

It is very important that 1 inch is left on the top and each side. Once you get your rough opening size, subtract 1 inch from the height and 2 from the width, and that will be your door size.

If you are measuring a window that already has another window frame in it’s place, follow the instructions at the beginning of this video.

How much of an overhang do I need over my door?

Your door needs to have an overhang that is the same length as its height.

Can I buy a transom for a door I already have?

Yes, as long as you have a beam between the door and the transom, or it will need some work to modify the stock door frame to allow a transom to be placed directly on top.

Installation

Is there an install guide for this?

Yes! We have video guides explaining each and every step of the process, as well as a full installation guide. The videos and the pdf will be provided to you with your door on easy to scan QR codes on our packaging.

Can I hang this door on a regular door frame in my house?

No, you can not hang our doors on other hinges. Our doors and and frames are handmade to fit each other exactly.

Can I install it myself?

Yes, many people install our doors and other products themselves. We have many videos on our installation guide that outline each step of the process. We also have a very visually explanatory installation guide with diagrams and pictures.

How many people do you typically need to install your doors?

We recommend at least 2 able bodied people for your installation, depending on your door size this number should increase to avoid any complications.

Do you install?

No, we do not, however most of our clients do not have trouble finding a contractor local to them.

How do interior door frames mount to the wall?

Most of our interior door frames use a bolt through system that allows you to connect sidelights and transoms as well as mount frames, sidelights, and transoms to your rough opening.

Do you have mounting tabs or a nailing fin on the jamb to make the installation easier?

Yes. On our exterior doors, tabs come welded onto the jamb with predrilled holes to allow for easy installation.

Our interior doors use a bolt through system that allows you to connect sidelights and transoms as well as mount frames, sidelights, and transoms to your rough opening.

Our thermally broken doors are mounted using nailing fins on the frames.

Our doors with sidelights do not have mounting tabs on their sides like most of our other doors do. The frames bolt directly through the jamb into the sidelight. The sidelights and door will then be mounted to the rough opening using mounting tabs.

Our sliding doors mount to your rough opening by directly bolting through the frame.

Shipping and Delivery

Do you ship to all 50 states?

Yes. We ship Nationwide.

**Shipments to Hawaii must be arranged and handled by you, the customer. Palletizing fees apply.

What form(s) of shipping do you use?

Most of our doors are shipped via LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) freight. Each order is palletized specifically for the size of the door.

We also offer customer pickup and local delivery for customers within 100 miles of our warehouse and showroom at:

2382 East 48th Street

Vernon, California

90058

United States

How long will it take for me to get my door or window once I purchase it?

The lead times are always kept up to date on our site on any product page, however our in-stock items ship from our warehouse here in Los Angeles within 2 weeks (local delivery excluded, based on PINKYS delivery schedule).

For LTL shipments, transit time is between 2-14 days to get to their destination terminal, depending on the destination. Once it has arrived, the carrier will call within a few days to set up a delivery date and time with you directly. Please note that no transit times are guaranteed, and holidays do affect these times as well.

For flatbed shipments, the time it takes to secure a flatbed will vary based on the time of year and the weather. Transit time once shipped varies based on destination, and will be anywhere from 1-10 days. The driver will contact you 24 hours before arrival.

How do LTL deliveries work?

For an LTL delivery, once the pallet is picked up, you will get updates from the carrier as it moves through each terminal. Once it arrives at the destination terminal, the carrier will contact you within a few days to schedule a delivery date and time.

Once a date is secured, it is necessary to have at minimum 2 to 3 able bodied persons to dismantle the pallet inside the box truck and bring each piece off one by one. This task only requires a standard #2 Phillips screw bit and a cordless drill, along with a pair of scissors to cut the strapping holding the doors down to the pallet. Lift gates are often available, but they are strictly up to the discretion of the driver and his manager due to safety protocols.

How do flatbed deliveries work?

When ordering multiple doors that would typically require more than 2 pallets when shipping via LTL freight, a flatbed may be the required form of shipment. With flatbed orders, a PINKYS representative will contact you via phone to discuss the process before having the order picked up.

Once PINKYS gets the OK from you, the customer, to put your load up for bid, the order will take anywhere between 1-4 days (sometimes more, depending on destination, sizing, and time of year) to get picked up from our warehouse. Once picked up, the flatbed driver will contact you 24 hours out from delivery.

There is no set date/time for flatbed deliveries. It is your responsibility to make sure you are there for offload at the time the driver arrives. You will have 30-45 minutes to offload your order. Most of our doors require 2-3 (sometimes 4) able bodied persons to lift and remove doors and frames from the flatbed. For larger orders, please make sure you have more manpower in order to offload within the time limits. PINKYS is not liable for any charges that may be incurred due to non-adherence to the above.

Care

Are these doors scratch resistant?

No, these doors are handmade and hand painted and will scratch from friction with sharp or rough surfaces.

How often should I clean my doors?

Our Iron Door Spray should be used frequently to clean and protect these doors. Each climate and area will require a different cleaning schedule. For instance, a high-traffic door in a beach climate should be cleaned very often in order to remove oils and salt deposits from the air. However, a low-traffic door in another environment may require significantly less cleaning.

Do I need to use a different glass cleaner and metal cleaner separately?

No, our Iron Door Spray will seamlessly clean each surface of your door. This will both clean your door and provide a layer of protection from the sun.
