Performance & Certification for PINKYS Custom Studio Steel Windows & Doors

How custom steel performs, and the third-party standards and certifications that prove it: energy efficiency, structural and coastal resilience, and sustainability.

PINKYS Custom Studio Steel assemblies are designed and manufactured to meet strict architectural standards. Here we’ll cover NFRC energy ratings, California Title 24 compliance, impact and hurricane ratings, Florida Product Approval for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, thermal break technology, and the material sustainability of steel.

Why performance and certifications matter for steel

Steel doors and windows are used in all manner of climates and challenging environments, and from energy codes to safety regulations, there are numerous standards they are required to meet. Every project is unique. Certifications and specific performance values allow architects to ensure every assembly specified will satisfy their project’s needs. Two principles run through every category on this page. First, a meaningful rating is whole-assembly: frame, glazing, sealant, and hardware are tested together. Second, the ratings that matter are third-party, tested and verified by an independent body. The categories overlap. A single coastal California assembly may need impact glazing, an NFRC energy rating, and Title 24 compliance at the same time. See the table below for an overview of the topics covered.

Certification & Performance Overview

NFRC RatingsIndependent, third-party energy performance certification (U-factor, SHGC, VT, condensation resistance, air leakage). The national baseline that every US energy code references.
Title 24 ComplianceCalifornia's energy code. Translates NFRC-certified values into prescriptive and performance-path compliance across the state's 16 climate zones.
Thermal Break TechnologyAn insulating barrier inside the steel frame that makes the energy ratings above achievable while keeping steel's slim sightlines.
HVHZ-Approved (Florida Product Approval)Whole-assembly testing to ASTM E1886 / E1996 for windborne debris and cyclic wind pressure. PINKYS's Air Series and Iron Doors hold Florida Product Approval including High-Velocity Hurricane Zone provisions, covering Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and the rest of Florida.
Sustainable Steel FenestrationThe material story. Durability, long service life, and steel's standing as one of the most recycled materials in the world.

Energy and thermal performance

Steel conducts heat more readily than any other frame material, which is why whole-unit energy ratings, not the center-of-glass number, are what building codes accept. PINKYS thermally broken Studio Steel is independently NFRC certified, engineered to meet California Title 24 prescriptive requirements in the applicable climate zones, and built on thermal-break technology from Jansen Janisol Arte 2.0 and Ottostumm FerroFinestra. The three guides below cover the certified product data, both Title 24 compliance paths across all 16 climate zones, and how the thermal break works.

The National Fenestration Rating Council is the independent, nonprofit body whose energy ratings are accepted by building codes in all 50 states and required for ENERGY STAR. Its label reports five whole-unit metrics: U-factor (heat transfer), SHGC (solar heat gain), VT (visible transmittance), condensation resistance, and air leakage.

NFRC matters more for steel than for any other frame material because steel conducts heat readily; the whole-unit number, not the center-of-glass number, is what a code official accepts. PINKYS thermally broken Studio Steel is independently certified and ships with its NFRC label attached.

Read the NFRC guide for the certified product data tables and how to specify by climate zone.

Title 24 Part 6 is the California Energy Code, administered by the California Energy Commission. The 2025 Energy Code, effective January 1, 2026, is the current operative version. It sets fenestration limits for U-factor, SHGC, and air leakage that vary across the state's 16 climate zones, demonstrated through either the prescriptive path (product by product) or the performance path (whole-building energy model).

California is PINKYS's home market. Thermally broken Studio Steel is NFRC certified and engineered to meet Title 24 prescriptive requirements in the applicable climate zones, and PINKYS supplies product data in the format energy modelers need for the performance path.

The Title 24 guide covers both paths, all 16 climate zones, and the documentation PINKYS provides.

A thermal break is an insulating barrier built into the steel frame that separates the interior and exterior steel, interrupting the heat that would otherwise conduct through the metal. This technology lets steel combine slim sightlines with modern energy, condensation, acoustic, and comfort performance, in any climate.

This is the enabling layer beneath the NFRC and Title 24 numbers. PINKYS builds thermally broken Studio Steel with Jansen Janisol Arte 2.0 and Ottostumm FerroFinestra W50 TB, W75 TB, B75 TB Bronze, and W75 TB Stainless Steel.

The thermal break guide explains how it works and routes to the thermally broken builds.

Structural and coastal resilience

Coastal and high-wind projects test the frame as much as the glass. Steel's rigidity and welded joints are a genuine advantage here, and PINKYS documents that performance through whole-assembly impact testing and Florida's product approval system.

Impact and hurricane rating is a whole-assembly certification to ASTM E1886 (the test method) and ASTM E1996 (the performance requirements): the assembly must survive a missile strike at the applicable level (large missile, a 9-lb 2x4 at 50 ft/sec, or small missile) and then thousands of cyclic pressure cycles without failure. In the field, "impact rated" and "hurricane rated" refer to the same pathway.

Impact rating is commonly read as a glass question, but it is also a frame question: the glazing only holds if the frame resists deformation under load. A welded steel frame distributes that load through the whole assembly, which is why steel is a logical choice for impact-rated large openings. The glazing uses laminated glass or a laminated IGU, where a PVB or SGP interlayer holds the unit together after the glass cracks.

PINKYS holds Florida Product Approval for the Air Series and Iron Doors product lines, evaluated including the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone provisions, the strictest tier of the Florida Building Code. The Air Series fixed window and swing door carry a single approval that covers all of Florida, including Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, with large and small missile impact rating at every height. The Iron Swing Door carries a matching HVHZ approval for Miami-Dade and Broward plus a separate tested variant for the rest of the state.

The HVHZ guide covers the full approval table by product, the jurisdiction boundary within Florida, and what PINKYS provides for permit submittal.

Fire and Wildfire Safety

Steel is noncombustible and adds no fuel to a fire. Real wildfire performance depends on the tested glazing assembly and installation, not the frame alone.

Many hillside and canyon properties in California and across the West sit in a Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI), where building in a designated fire hazard severity zone triggers ignition-resistant construction requirements.

Steel's relevance here is its material nature: steel is noncombustible and does not contribute fuel to a fire, and a steel frame retains its strength better than many alternatives as temperatures rise. In a wildfire exposure, the most common points of failure for openings are the glazing and the seals around the frame, so any genuine wildfire performance claim depends on the tested glazing assembly and installation detail, not the frame metal alone.

Important: PINKYS does not currently hold wildfire or WUI fire-rating certifications for its assemblies. This section is intended to give architects general context only. For any project in a fire hazard severity zone, confirm the applicable requirements with the local authority having jurisdiction and the project's fire or code consultant, and contact the Studio Steel team to discuss current options.

Material and Environmental Performance

The most sustainable window is often the one that never needs replacing. Steel earns its environmental case two ways: a service life measured in decades, and a material that recycles repeatedly without losing strength.

The most sustainable window is often the one that doesn’t need replacing. Steel windows and doors are built for a long service life: a well-made, properly finished steel assembly can last for decades, which means fewer replacement cycles and less embodied carbon spread across the life of the building.

Steel is also one of the most recycled materials in the world. It can be recycled repeatedly without losing its structural properties, so steel at the end of one building's life becomes the raw material for the next, and new steel typically already contains a meaningful share of recycled content.

Together, durability and recyclability are the core of the sustainability case for steel fenestration: long life in the building, and full recovery of the material afterward.

Frequent Questions

It is independent, third-party confirmation that a complete assembly, frame and glazing together, meets a defined standard: energy performance (NFRC), code compliance (Title 24), or structural and coastal resistance (impact and hurricane ratings, Miami-Dade NOA). A certification tests the assembly as built, not the steel or the glass alone.
PINKYS Studio Steel carries NFRC energy ratings, meets Title 24, and is built on the thermal break technology that makes those numbers possible in a steel frame. PINKYS's Air Series and Iron Doors product lines separately hold Florida Product Approval evaluated including High-Velocity Hurricane Zone provisions, covering fixed windows and swing doors with large and small missile impact rating. Contact PINKYS to confirm current certification status for your specific Studio Steel configuration.
On interior work the thermal break earns its place through condensation control and design consistency rather than energy code. It controls condensation on interior glazing where a partition separates zones at different temperature or humidity, including pool enclosures, spas, conservatories, and wine rooms. The deeper thermally broken profiles also carry thicker and laminated glazing, up to 56 mm in W75 TB, which supports acoustic and high-performance glass build-ups on interior partitions. And on projects where interior and exterior openings sit in sightline of one another, specifying a thermally broken system throughout lets the interior profiles match the exterior ones exactly. Hot-rolled W20 and W40 remain the right call for standard interior partitions where none of these conditions apply and the finest possible sightline is the priority.
Yes, and coastal and California projects often require it. The same assembly can hold an NFRC energy rating, meet Title 24, and carry an impact rating at the same time, with thermal break technology making the energy numbers achievable in a steel frame. Each rating is reported on its own terms; PINKYS supplies the matching documentation package.
PINKYS does not currently hold wildfire or WUI fire-rating certifications. Steel itself is noncombustible and does not add fuel to a fire, but a genuine wildfire performance claim depends on the tested glazing and installation, so for any project in a fire hazard severity zone, confirm requirements with the local authority having jurisdiction and contact PINKYS to discuss options.
Steel is durable, with a long service life that reduces replacement cycles, and it is one of the most recycled materials in the world, recyclable repeatedly without losing its structural properties. See the Sustainable Steel Fenestration section above.
