What Is Decorative & Textured Glass?

Textured, patterned, and tinted glass options for privacy, light diffusion, and aesthetic character, as an alternative to clear glass. Studio Steel offers eight decorative and textured options.

Frost

Frost is Studio Steel's most private glass option. From either side, no clear image of the opposite side is possible, only shadows and rough shapes, which is what makes this the highest-privacy option offered. Light passes through diffused rather than blocked, so the space stays lit even though nothing is directly visible through it. Because the texture sits on the interior-facing surface of the unit rather than exposed to the elements, Frost requires dual pane or greater; see Configuration Availability below.

Diamond

Diamond is a dense, all-over faceted pattern, similar to a pebbled surface, that distorts shapes and objects even close to the glass. Distortion increases with distance. Light transmission runs moderate to low, which suits entries or openings where privacy matters more than brightness.

Wood

Wood is a tight grain texture, installed to run vertically on the unit. Shapes stay visible at close range, but clarity drops off at most other distances, and movement is visible even where shape detail isn't. Light transmission runs low to moderate, significantly diffused by the grain, which suits projects that want low light alongside strong privacy.

Ribbed

Ribbed is a vertical ribbed surface that dilutes shape and detail almost entirely, even a few feet from the glass; only minimal object clarity remains at close range. Light transmission runs moderate to high but diffused, producing a softer overall glow rather than direct clarity. A fit for openings that need a high degree of privacy at typical viewing distances while still bringing in light.

Glue Chip

Glue Chip resembles disturbed water viewed at a distance, with crisscrossing lines suggesting the surface of open water seen from above. Light transmission and visibility are moderate.

Ford Blue

Ford Blue is a blue-tinted glass that cuts glare. Some reflectivity at a distance adds privacy, though up close the glass reads clearly. Light transmission is moderate but muted, giving interiors a cooler cast, a fit for projects that want softer, less bright daylight.

Tea

Tea is a warm, tea-toned tinted glass that cuts glare the same way Grey Tint does. Reflectivity at a distance adds some privacy, with clear visibility up close and a warm, muted light rather than a cool one. Light transmission runs moderate but muted, suited to projects that want a warmer ambient light.

Green Reflective

Green Reflective is a green-tinted reflective glass, finished with a metallic oxide coating that reflects heat and UV rays while giving the surface a distinct green cast. Light transmission runs moderate but muted, suited to projects that want a cooler ambient light.

Every decorative and textured glass option is available in single, double, and triple pane, with one exception: Frost requires dual pane or greater. Its texture sits on the interior-facing surface of the unit, and without a second pane protecting it, that surface is exposed and marred easily.

Tempered glass is standard across every Studio Steel assembly, with no exceptions for texture or tint. All eight options can also be combined with Low-E, SB 70, or laminated construction. Decorative glass styles may affect NFRC rating. Consult with the Studio Steel team during specification.
