Luxury Custom Steel Windows & Doors

Built with Ottostumm, Jansen and PINKYS Air Series steel profiles. Steel systems for residential architecture, engineered to the opening.

Steel lets you do things with windows and doors that other materials can't: hold a whole wall of glass in a slim frame, swing an oversized front door on a pivot, or fold doors away completely so the living room opens to the terrace. PINKYS Studio Steel builds every piece for your home alone, from the breakfast nook where the day begins to the wine room where it ends.

Custom steel windows and doors shape how a home feels: open, filled with light, and connected to the outdoors from room to room.

  • Walls of glass. Bi-fold and multi-fold doors that fold away entirely, so the living room and the terrace become one space.
  • Pivot doors. An entry set on a pivot rather than hinges, which lets it be built taller and wider than a hinged door.
  • Sliding and pocket doors. Large panels of glass that glide aside or disappear into the wall. Exterior and interior applications.
  • Windows. Curved bays, arched tops and geometric shapes, each designed around the architecture of the house.
  • Wine rooms. A collection displayed behind glass, framed in steel slim enough to keep the focus on the bottles.
  • Partitions and screens. Steel and glass walls, screens and shower enclosures that carry the same lines from room to room.

The homeowners came to PINKYS directly, with no architect or builder leading the project. After a call and a visit to the Vernon showroom, they worked one on one with a PINKYS sales representative through a top-to-bottom remodel, with every window and door in the house built by PINKYS. Their brief was simple: slim steel, as much glass as possible, and natural light in every room.

The result is a house built to enjoy the view, with the outside brought in. Three pairs of French doors open the living room to the loggia and pool, a curved bay of steel casements wraps the breakfast room, and the wine room sits behind a single wall of glass framed in fine steel. Rocky Mountain Hardware, selected with PINKYS, finishes each door in handcrafted bronze.

A project of this scale doesn't need an architect to begin. PINKYS can take a homeowner from the first call to the final delivery, and works just as closely with an architect or designer when there is one.

Outside, where California's energy code applies, homes typically use thermally broken steel windows and doors, Ottostumm W50 TB or Jansen Janisol Arte 2.0, which separates the inner and outer frame to keep heat where it belongs. Inside, on partitions, screens and wine rooms, hot-rolled Ottostumm W20 and W40 give the finest profiles in the range.

If your exterior doors are thermally broken and your interior doors are hot-rolled, they will still look like one family, since Ottostumm W50 TB shares the fine lines of hot-rolled W40. Where interior and exterior doors sit side by side and you want an exact match, thermally broken steel throughout is the way to go. For the largest openings, the PINKYS Air Series carries taller and wider spans at lower weight.

Your PINKYS sales representative can help choose the right system for each opening. See Steel Profile Systems.

Every steel window and door is finished in the same eight-stage coating system, with no reduced finish tier.

Black is the most often chosen, alongside White for interiors, hand-brushed Oil-Rubbed Bronze, and the five colors of the California Collection: Sunset Pink, Palm Desert Sand, Montecito Mint, Angeles Green and Casual Khaki. Custom colors are available, and paint color is quoted per project.

Before committing to a paint color, order a physical sample, finished on real steel, and see it in the light of the house. See Finishes & Paint Systems.

Thermally broken steel windows and doors bring energy performance to a slender frame. Ottostumm W50 TB is NFRC certified at a whole-unit U-factor as low as 0.21 for fixed windows and 0.31 for casements, and PINKYS supplies the data the project's energy consultant needs.

See NFRC Ratings and Title 24 Compliance.

Windows and doors are among the most lasting choices in a home. They frame the view you wake up to and the light you live with every day, so it's worth knowing exactly what steel involves before you choose it. Here is what to expect.

  • An investment. Each opening is drawn and built individually, and priced accordingly. Custom steel is not comparable to a catalog window.
  • It conducts heat. Exterior windows and doors need a thermal break to meet the energy code. See Energy Efficiency.
  • It is heavy. Structure and installation are planned around its weight from early in the design.
  • Lead time. 14 to 16 weeks from approved drawings, with design and approval ahead of that.
  • Care. The finish is built to last, with a little care. Occasional cleaning with the PINKYS clean-and-protect spray, made for iron and steel, keeps it looking like new.

In return, steel gives you windows and doors that last for decades, more glass in a slimmer frame, and a material that can be recycled again and again.

  • Hancock Park Tudor, Los Angeles. Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent were commissioned to open up a 1925 Tudor that had been built to look inward. They replaced the windows and doors throughout, keeping only the original front door, and PINKYS built the custom steel, as Architectural Digest noted in its tour of the finished house.
  • Hancock Park Spanish Colonial, Los Angeles. Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent spent two years reworking a 1928 Spanish Colonial in Hancock Park as their own home. For the openings, Brent said they "went with the beautiful iron and glass doors from PINKYS." Architectural Digest toured the finished house.
  • West Hollywood pied-a-terre. A 985 square foot apartment reworked by Nate Berkus Associates, where the challenge was storage and light rather than scale.
  • Forbes profiled PINKYS as the steel-door brand AD-100 designers specify across their highest-profile residential work.
  • Architectural Digest has toured PINKYS work in both of Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent's Hancock Park homes, Modern Luxury Angeleno twice named PINKYS Best Custom Windows and Doors in its Best of Los Angeles awards, and PINKYS doors and windows have appeared on HGTV's Rock the Block and TLC's Nate & Jeremiah by Design.

Every project begins with the drawings. The Studio Steel team reviews the design against what each system can carry, draws every opening in architectural detail, and brings the drawings to you or your architect for approval before anything is built.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom steel is priced per project from the drawings, since every opening is made individually. The system, the glass, the size and style of each opening, how many of them open, and the finish all shape the total. Your PINKYS sales representative can price your project from your plans.

Not necessarily. Many homeowners work directly with PINKYS, from a first call and showroom visit through drawings, approval and delivery, and the Studio Steel team works just as closely with an architect or designer when there is one. Projects that enlarge openings or change the structure may need plans or an engineer for permitting, so check with your local building department. Installation is carried out by your contractor, supported by PINKYS installation guidance and a dedicated support team.

It depends on where the opening is. Exterior windows and doors on heated or cooled rooms typically use thermally broken steel, such as Ottostumm W50 TB or Jansen Janisol Arte 2.0, to meet the energy code. Interior openings often use hot-rolled Ottostumm W20 or W40, which has the finest profiles, and the PINKYS Air Series in tubular steel suits the largest openings. Many homes combine more than one.

Thermally broken steel windows can be. Ottostumm W50 TB is NFRC certified at a whole-unit U-factor as low as 0.21 for fixed windows and 0.31 for casements. Hot-rolled steel carries no thermal break, so it suits interior openings and spaces where no energy target applies.

They can, with thermally broken steel. Ottostumm W50 TB is NFRC certified as low as a 0.21 U-factor for fixed windows, and PINKYS supplies the data the project's energy consultant uses to confirm compliance. See Title 24 Compliance.

Door size depends on the profile system, the weight of the glass and the hardware carrying the panel, and is confirmed with the Studio Steel team during specification, along with the project's engineer where one is involved. A pivot door carries its weight on a pivot rather than hinges, which allows a taller and wider panel than a hinged door, and the PINKYS Air Series builds the largest openings in the range. For a full wall of glass, bi-fold and multi-fold doors divide the opening into panels that stack away. Your PINKYS sales representative can confirm sizes against your plans.

Yes. Arched, curved and geometric openings are drawn to the architecture, and curved bays are built as runs of units following the wall, with curved glass available on request.

Yes. PINKYS Studio Steel builds wine room walls, enclosures and doors in slim steel framing, drawn to the room. Where a cooled wine room meets warmer living space, the glass is specified with the room's temperature and humidity in mind, and the Studio Steel team works through it with your wine room designer.

Black is the most popular, alongside White for interiors, hand-brushed Oil-Rubbed Bronze, and the five California Collection colors: Sunset Pink, Palm Desert Sand, Montecito Mint, Angeles Green and Casual Khaki. Custom colors are available, quoted per project.

Steel can rust if its finish is damaged, which is why the coating matters. Every Studio Steel piece runs through an eight-stage coating system, with an e-coat layer for corrosion protection beneath a PPG fluorocarbon topcoat. Occasional cleaning with the PINKYS clean-and-protect spray, and PINKYS touch-up paint for any chips, keeps the finish protected.

Production takes 14 to 16 weeks from approved drawings. Design and approval come before that and shipping comes after, so the overall timeline depends on how quickly the drawings are finalized and where the project is located. Delivery to the East Coast can take up to three additional weeks.

Your contractor. PINKYS makes the windows and doors and provides installation guidance in English and Spanish, and a dedicated support team works with the installer from delivery through completion.
