Glass Configurations for Custom Steel Windows & Doors

Single pane glass is a single lite with no insulating cavity. It's specified for interior applications, historic restoration work, and non-thermally-demanding environments, such as loft partitions and interior steel screens, where insulating performance isn't the primary requirement.

Single pane describes the number of glass layers, not the glass type. Like every Studio Steel assembly, a single pane lite is tempered as standard; see Tempered Glass. For exterior applications in conditioned spaces, double pane is the standard specification.

Double pane is the standard configuration for Studio Steel exterior assemblies, thermally broken and non-thermally broken alike. It's built as an IGU: two panes separated by a sealed, argon-filled cavity that slows heat transfer between the interior and exterior panes. Low-E coating is standard on double pane builds; see Low-E Glass.

As with single pane, double pane describes the construction, not the glass type. A double pane unit can incorporate tempered glass, laminated glass, or both; see Tempered Glass and Laminated Glass.

Triple pane adds a second sealed, argon-filled cavity: three panes total, two cavities. It's the highest thermal performance tier Studio Steel offers, and is recommended for high-altitude projects, cold climates, and all-day sun exposures where thermal performance is the primary driver.

It is not automatically a security or forced-entry product. The additional pane improves thermal and acoustic performance, not penetration resistance on its own; where security performance is required, that comes from the glass composition (tempered, laminated, or both), not the pane count. Studio Steel laminate glass is typically offered as part of a dual pane configuration, combining the insulating performance of a standard IGU with the added properties of laminated glass: one laminated lite paired with a second pane, separated by a sealed, argon-filled cavity. It can be integrated as needed into standard or thermally broken assemblies.
