San Gabriel Valley is a Southern California region that is surrounded by the San Gabriel Mountains and the San Rafael Hills. The area was named after the San Gabriel Mission, which was founded by early Spanish explorers and settlers. Located east of the city of Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley contains over 30 incorporated cities and a handful of large, unincorporated communities. Some prominent San Gabriel Valley cities and towns include Pasadena, Monterey Park, West Covina, Altadena, Whittier, Rosemead and Alhambra.
The Tongva Native American peoples were the San Gabriel Valley’s earliest known inhabitants, and many of the region’s place names are derived from their language. The area’s warm, Mediterranean climate is ideal for farming, which was the primary industry in the San Gabriel Valley during its early years. Today, the San Gabriel Valley is recognized to have one of the fastest growing economies in California. Healthcare, professional services, manufacturing, tourism, technology and education are some of the industries that are represented within San Gabriel Valley communities. Regional partnerships with industry help to ensure that economic growth in the San Gabriel Valley continues for its residents. Some companies that have headquarters there include the engineering firm Parsons Corporation, Asian food giant Huy Fong Foods and popular food retailer Trader Joe’s.
