How to Maintain a Steel Door?

Maintaining your steel doors in a proper manner is the best way to ensure that they remain secure and pretty for years to come. Well-maintained steel doors can easily last more than 30 years, saving you a large amount of money in the long run since you won’t need to replace them as often as any other door.

Thankfully, steel doors aren’t too difficult to take care of! A little cleaning and basic reparation will help you get the best out of your steel door. Here’s all you need to know:

Clean your steel door

In order to ensure that your steel doors last for a long time, it’s important to clean them on a regular basis. Find a good cleaning solution—alcohol-based solutions or multi-purpose cleaners should work fine. If you can clean your remote control or light switches with it, it should be good to go.

Dampen a piece of microfiber pad or cloth with water, and apply some of the cleaning solutions to it to wipe your steel door down. Rinse it with water and make sure that it’s completely dry by the end—don’t leave it to air dry; use a fresh cloth to wipe any remaining water droplets.

Certain things can actually harm your steel door in your endeavor to keep it clean—using bleach solutions with a high concentration, highly alkaline cleaners, abrasive mediums for applying the cleaner, or applying the cleaner directly to the door can damage the door’s protective coating or the steel itself.

Paint your steel door

If you want to add an extra layer of protection or simply want to change the way your steel door looks, consider painting it. Take off the hinges and any other hardware in order to make the process faster.

Remove any old paint using a paint-stripper or a heat gun and give it a good cleaning to get rid of any dust, oil, or grime. Sand the door to prep it for primer and use a roller and angled brush to apply the primer all over the surface. Wait for it to dry completely before you apply a minimum of two coats of paint that’s specifically meant for steel. Using the wrong primer or paint can cause the paint to chip or not stick to the door at all.

Maintain the locks and handles

Your locks and handles are part of the door, so they’re just as important to take care of. Clean both of them often using the same solution as the one that you use for the rest of the steel door.

It’s also important to keep them properly lubricated to the number of small and moving parts—you only need to do this once a year, and you can find many different spray lubricants easily in the market.
