What Door Size Do I Need?

How to Measure - Current Door Installed

If you currently have a door installed and are looking to replace it with a new PINKYS door, you will first need to obtain both the width and height measurements, as described below.

Width: Measure from the inside of the left door jamb to the inside of the right door jamb, omitting the projected door stops on both sides. Add 2" to this number to get the width of your new PINKYS door.

EX: 142" (width measurement) + 2" = 144" PINKYS door width

Height: Measure from the floor to the bottom of the top of the frame, omitting the projected door stop on the frame itself. Add 1" to this number to get the height of your new PINKYS door.

EX: 83" (height measurement) + 1" = 84" PINKYS door height

How to Measure - Visible Studs / Rough Opening

If you are working with a new construction, or have your wall opened up to the studs, then you will be able to measure for the rough opening itself. Rough opening measurements can be obtained as described below.

Width: Measure from the inside of the left stud to the inside of the right stud. Subtract 1" from this number to get the width of your new PINKYS door.

EX: 145" (width measurement) - 1" = 144" PINKYS door width

Height: Measure from the floor to the bottom of the header stud. Subtract 1" from this number to get the height of your new PINKYS door.

EX: 85" (height measurement) - 1" = 84" PINKYS door height

What does Net Size Mean?

When ordering a new PINKYS door, it important to note that all of our sliding doors are pre-hung, meaning they include the door panels, frame, as well as tracks required for the door to operate.

In terms of our exterior pocket sliders, the net size is the overall size of the sliding unit, including it's pre-hung frame, but excluding the dimensions of the pocket cavity that gets inset into the wall itself.

What is Jamb Size?

Jamb size refers to the depth of the door's jamb and frame, which correlates directly with the depth of the wall in which your door will be installed.

All of our standard exterior Pocket Sliders include mounting tabs that are installed from the interior of your space. These tabs are inset to allow for drywall up to 5/8" to be installed directly over the tabs and sit flush with your frames edge.

The jamb size of our exterior pocket sliders, which directly impacts the pocket cavity depth required within your wall, is dictated by the number of panels your slider is built with.

Jamb Size | Cavity Depth

The necessary cavity depth, which is the jamb size of the slider itself, is going to be determined by the number of panels your slider is built with. Below, we have some of our standard net pocket slider widths, along with their panel counts and corresponding jamb sizes.

Up to 96" Net Door Width: 2 Panels | 7.2" Jamb / Cavity Depth

108" - 144" Net Door Width: 3 Panels | 9.9" Jamb / Cavity Depth

154" - 184" Net Door Width: 4 Panels | 12.6" Jamb / Cavity Depth

Cavity Width

The necessary cavity width is going to be determined by the width of the panels that will be pocketing into the wall. A simple equation to calculate your approximate cavity depth can be found below.

Approximate Cavity Width Calculation

Take the net width of your slider, then divide that width by the number of panels your slider contains. Add 2" to get your approximate cavity depth requirement.

Example: 144" wide slider | 3 Panels

(144" / 3) + 2" = 50" Cavity Width

How much of an overhang do I need over my door?

All exterior units should have a proper overhang, as specified by the measurements below.

Overhang Depth:
Your overhang's depth should be as deep as your door is tall, at minimum.

Overhang Width: Your overhang's width should extend out the width of your door on both sides, at minimum.
